The bay of Mida Creek expands across an area of 32 Km. This region encompasses a diverse range of marine and tidal environments along Kenya’s northern coast, extending from slightly below Malindi town towards the south, even beyond the entrance to Mida Creek. The area hosts various habitats, including intertidal rock, sand, and mud; fringing reefs and coral gardens; expanses of seagrass beds; formations like coral cliffs, platforms, and small islands; stretches of sandy beaches; and extensive mangrove forests.
The Mida Creek ecosystem is known to be one of the most productive mangrove ecosystems in the world.
Moreover, it is recognized as an Important Birds Area (IBA) and forms a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve together with Arabuko–Sokoke Forest.
