About Vasco da Gama
Vasco da Gama, the renowned Portuguese explorer, is celebrated as the first European to establish a direct sea route from Europe to India. Born in 1460 in Sines, Portugal, he led the pioneering 1497–1499 voyage that opened new trade possibilities and cemented Portugal’s position as a global maritime power. His expeditions reshaped world history, linking continents through commerce, culture, and navigation.
A pivotal chapter of Vasco da Gama’s journey unfolded along the East African coast, particularly in Malindi, Kenya. When he arrived in April 1498, Malindi was a thriving Swahili city-state ruled by a Sultan who welcomed foreign traders. Unlike the hostile reception he faced in other coastal towns, da Gama enjoyed friendly relations in Malindi—so much so that the Sultan offered him a skilled navigator, traditionally known as Ahmed Ibn Majid (though some historians dispute the identity), who guided his fleet across the Indian Ocean to Calicut, India. This cooperation marked a historic moment, bridging African and European navigation traditions.
During his stay, Vasco da Gama also commissioned the construction of the famous Vasco da Gama Pillar, which still stands in Malindi today as one of Kenya’s oldest monuments. Erected in 1498, the pillar symbolised the alliance between the Portuguese and the Sultan of Malindi and served as a navigational marker for future sailors. Da Gama’s interaction with Malindi not only shaped the success of his maiden voyage but also left a lasting legacy in the region, influencing centuries of trade and cultural exchange along the Kenyan coast.
