About Katoi Wa Tabaka
Known widely as Katoi wa Tabaka, Mathiaspato has built a reputation that goes far beyond his name. While the nickname refers to his stature and age, it fails to capture the immense creativity and ingenuity he brings to the music scene. As a core member of the pioneering Tabaka group, alongside Mbuyu, Katoi has played a vital role in establishing hip hop on the coastal music map of Kenya. Their efforts have laid the foundation for a thriving local scene, inspiring many young artists to pursue their craft with passion and innovation.
Beyond his contributions as a musician, Katoi is a staunch advocate for the preservation of Giriama culture and traditions. Through his unique style of hip hop, which he calls “Kaya Hiphop,” he merges contemporary beats with cultural narratives, ensuring that the rich heritage of the Mijikenda people, especially those in Malindi, continues to thrive. His music is not only entertainment but also a platform for cultural education, pride, and advocacy, bridging the gap between tradition and modern artistic expression.
Katoi’s artistic journey extends internationally. He has lived in Rome, Italy, where he collaborated with several musicians, including Giulia Ugatti, an acoustic soul singer, and Enose Dee, a Kenyan artist based in Rome. Currently, he is focused on releasing his latest album, KAYA MUSIC, with several tracks being produced in studios abroad. This international exposure has enhanced his production quality and broadened his musical reach, positioning him as a leading figure in both Malindi’s music scene and the global hip hop community.
