Mnazi (noun). This is a coconut tree, Cocos nucifera. The tree-stem is rarely used, except for large stout posts or as props. When cut down, the soft nutty substance at the top, from which the leaves and blossoms grow, is eaten as a delicacy (moyo wa mnazi, kilele cha mnazi).
The other principal parts and products are the leaf (kuti), fruit(nazi), fibre (Kumbi) and the sap (tembo). The trees are distinguished as mkinda, i.e young, not yet bearing; mume, male, and mke, female.
