A section of business people in Malindi Kenya sub county in Kilifi county are hopeful of good tidings these high season as international tourists start to jet in for the start of the holiday season.
A spot check on several hotels in and around Malindi town has revealed that bookings are already being made and bed occupancy in most hotels is expected to rise in comparison to last year when the tourist numbers dropped drastically.
Several businesses that are dependent on tourists have already started operating after being closed for the better part of the year. One of the traders who spoke to me said that the future was looking bright as tourists have already started visiting their business.
Mr. Mutua Kilonzo, who sells animal carvings at the Malindi tourist market said that the early arrival of tourists could only mean that the high season had kicked in.
This time last year there were no wazungus in Malindi Kenya, so this year things will be better,” said Mr. Kilonzo.
The entertainment sector in Malindi Kenya is also expecting to reap big as some establishments that had been closed re open their doors.
A spot check along Lamu road over the weekend revealed all the nightclubs were operating. Patapata beach club which is the biggest club in terms of client accommodation even had an event dubbed the ‘grand reopening’ which brought artists from Nairobi.
An employee at Tamani Jua beach resort who sort anonymity said that they had already received guests and were expecting more as bookings continued.
The resumption of direct flights into the country is bound to positively impact the tourism sector as flights from Italy continue to grace our airport.
What most of the players in the tourism sector seem to agree on is that security is paramount if the industry is to record high returns as in years past.
